Til Death Do Us Party

It might seem out of character for Charli xcx, the face of last year’s “brat summer,” to settle down with a wedding, but her intimate ceremony proved that traditions are what you make of them, and even at the altar, you can still be a party girl.

The era associated with Charli’s album brat, more commonly known as “brat summer,” was defined by endless partying, a blinding shade of lime green, and unapologetically embracing the messier side of yourself. So how do sentimental vows, the color white, and keeping yourself together in front of friends and family on “the most important day of your life" fit into the brat universe? Somehow, Charli made it work.

During an intimate ceremony in London on July 19, Charli said “I do” to her long-time partner and drummer for The 1975, George Daniel. The newlyweds exchanged vows alongside their limited wedding party that included Charli’s parents and some of George’s bandmates at Hackney Town Hall.

Charli kept it classic by celebrating her marriage in Vivienne Westwood’s Nova Cora mini dress. The corseted mini dress featured an off-the-shoulder neckline and a high center-cut skirt, paired with traditional bridal elements like a short train, long veil, and white slingback heels. Although it’s a departure from her usual brat attire, her final accessory was a pair of signature black, visor-esque sunglasses, making for the perfect combination of classic bride and rave-ready.

The party didn’t stop at the end of the ceremony, as the two lovers rented out a local Italian eatery to enjoy a meal (and some cigarettes), reportedly nodding to their upcoming second wedding celebration in southern Italy later this summer. In true “brat summer” fashion, Charli switched out of her Westwood bridal attire to let loose in a more flowy Saint Laurent bridal piece perfect for a night out. The couple ended their wedding day by consummating their marriage with martinis, trays of cigarettes, and performing DJ sets at a bar in Dalston, an area of East London.

There’s always room for tradition, but it shouldn’t come at the cost of sacrificing your own individuality. Charli xcx’s recent wedding ceremony did not condemn indulging in conventional norms; quite the opposite actually. There is beauty in tradition, but it’s how you infuse it with personality and intention that makes it truly meaningful. By creating the perfect balance between tradition and individuality, Charli proved that everything can be romantic and that the party doesn’t stop once you tie the knot.
