You’re Cute Jeans

Denim is an essential part of any wardrobe. Jeans, in particular, are a staple. But it’s hard to find that perfect garment with so many factors to consider. Fit. Wash. Length. Silhouette. Luckily, we’ve got Diesel to grace us with all of our denim dreams.

A standout from Diesel’s Fall 2022 collection, this full-look trench hybrid plays with proportion and weight through layered, washed denim. The oversized structure reworks utility codes into something sculptural, softened by worn textures and raw-edged volume. Styled with a metallic peep-toe heel and a stark white clutch, the look balances industrial grit with directional elegance. Look 8, Diesel Fall 2022 Ready-to-Wear Collection. Photo by Gorunway.com. Since 1978, Diesel (founded by Renzo Rosso and Adriano Goldschmied), has been a brand synonymous with denim mastery; famous for curating the highest quality, most fashion-forward and expertly fitted denim. It goes deeper than the surface, though. They’re responsible for some of the coolest denim garms in the fashion world: denim heels, unique denim bags, unusual skirts, dresses, and of course, jeans. Each project adopts creativity, modern design and unapologetic drip, no matter how bold. “A true alternative to the established luxury market” as described by Diesel themselves.

Although a heavily saturated market, Diesel stands out as a brand bending the ‘rules’ of fashion. For that, their runways are always an interesting watch.

In 2020, Glenn Martens was appointed as creative director, and has since produced the most eclectic and daring collections for Diesel, covering all aspects of fashion. With a fashion plate overflowing as creative director of Maison Margiela as well, Martens never fails to create a show of one, brazen apparel, but also meaning and audacious scenery. It goes without saying that runway shows are filled with stunning attire, but some looks just stand out as uber interesting and warrant a discussion. Over the last few years and collections, some of Diesel’s looks have made eyes across the world lock in. Thank you, Glenn Martens, we say in unison.

Fall-Winter 2025

Diesel’s Fall-Winter 2025 runway was fueled by daring pieces, from sheer and distressed fabrics to bright colours and layers. And obviously, denim excellence. In Milan, a stunning scene of graffiti street art by over 7000 artists was the perfect modern and vibrant pairing to Diesel's new RTW collection, capturing the contemporary vibe of the fits perfectly. Each piece of art represents an individual’s personal creative vision and talent. Diesel also released a Street Art Capsule - a collection of garments intertwining the art of unique, talented artists into the clothing, including Farai Engelbrecht, Brianna Toomer and more.

There were 76 looks in total on the FW25 runway, all with enticing architecture. But one in particular, coincidentally the last one, stood out for its vibe. Saving the best till last? Maybe.

This look has crafted ‘jeans and a shirt’ into something visionary that perfectly encapsulates Diesel’s edgy, contemporary persona. From the silhouette to the shoes, this look is beguiling. It kinda makes you stop and stare. The crinkled shirt facade adds dimension and visible texture, accentuated by the lack of accessories. Leaving the arms barren draws our focus directly to the shirt, giving it the attention supply it deserves. Of course, it's not a ‘normal’ shirt - it appears to only cover the front of the torso, creating a cool 3d visual and something unique for the runway. Something kinda never seen before, but something we all now suddenly want to own. This…shirt? pairs well with the iconic low rise grey wash jeans and the footwear of a similar colourway, as it contrasts the darker hues and stands out as its own cool entity. This look in particular is interesting as it melds trends of the past and perhaps the future to curate something chic. It also graced the runway in a blue shirt x blue jeans and a blue shirt x grey jeans colourway, a unisex stand out on this runway. Low rise jeans + a natural silhouette + futuristic designs = an obsessed fashion community.

Pre-Fall 2024

Diesel’s Pre Fall 2024 show was a denim masterclass. Duh. It was full of denim on denim on denim couture, by creative director Glenn Martens and stylist Ursina Gysi. A definite modern vibe, this is the fashion of the future. Again, a few looks were head turners.

This look is kinda like if you can’t pick a style, so you pick every style. It perfectly blends streetwear, grunge and elegance to create a drippy combination of garments for the runway. The graphic, oversized tee, firstly, builds a baggy, boxy silhouette, aligned with current trends of streetwear. It complements the skirt perfectly by adding a pop of colour but still maintaining the grungy, distressed vibe. Together they create a fresh aesthetic. The skirt reveals just enough of the stiletto boot to make a statement, whilst keeping some of the length a mystery. Diesel does footwear very well, their shoe archive is so versatile, from sneakers to boots to denim shoes. And these stiletto-style boots could take any outfit up a notch.

Finally, the handbag (Double-D Shoulder bag) incorporates minimalist glam with the small Diesel logo, whilst still giving futuristic fashion with the unique shape and material. The variety overall of each look in this collection channels each piece’s own creative vision, and shows the diversity and innovative nature of Diesel as a brand. Of course denim came first, but the branch into accessories, footwear and so on allows acceleration of the skills of Glenn Martens, and gives off a vibe unique to other brands.

Look 19

Another urban answer to fashion from the PF24 runway. One of the most debated denim ‘rules’ that comes and goes is whether it’s acceptable to mix different denims. Some believe denim on denim should mean blue matched with an identical blue, like a denim jacket with an identical pair of jeans. Creating a satisfying blue synchrony rather than a disheveled indigo mess. But, others argue it's fine to have mismatched hues, maybe a dark acid wash jacket with a lighter jean. Adding a little creativity and contrast.

Perhaps even denim on denim at all is a bit risky.  When faced with such dilemma, do you mix and match various blues and risk offending the fashion community…or play it safe and scrap the denim daze altogether? Well, if Diesel layered and mixed denims on the runway (like, many times) then it’s ok for us to follow. In our ‘rebellious’ era.

It’s giving unisex denim for days; a blanket of layers in a range of blue hues. It’s kinda mysterious, with the hood concealing the model and making the whole sight…denim. The oversized denim jacket with a huge Diesel logo looks interesting in the contrasting stitching, too, adding a further splash of modern design to the look. For the bottoms, dark wash, baggy jorts are layered over lighter wash jeans.

Three different shades of denim kinda feels illegal, but they go together so well and this look is proof that mixing different washes is really not that deep. The boots are also a key aspect of this look, the juxtaposition of their dark, edgy look and the blue of the denim draws positive attention. They are of a unique shape, with a high platform and thick sole. Denim and boots is a trending pairing at the moment, so this just seems right. It feels like each garment of this look could be taken as an individual to make something cool, but they are also so effective together. Diesel is the master of denim. Diesel is perhaps the master of quirky footwear. So, no surprise, this look is flawless; the quintessential streetwear fit.

Look 39

A completely different vibe. Evidently, pre-Fall 2024 was pretty drippy. Diesel brought out such a range of looks that the whole collection needs discussing. But look 39 in particular gave futuristic corporate glam. Emphasis on futuristic.

This is something that maybe we wouldn’t immediately think it was by Diesel. But it is one of the most interesting looks of this runway, by far. It’s chic, futuristic and distinctive; made up of a selection of cool pieces. The bag is prominent right away; Diesel’s accessories are always iconic so it's only natural. It's the Play-Crossbody bag, available in a roster of colourways via the Diesel website. This bag is different from a lot of others on the market - the shape in particular is eye-catching. It could easily enhance any outfit into something ultra modern, different and interesting. Through this product, Diesel is also reducing the impact fashion has on the environment, as it is made partly of recycled materials. The fashion community is becoming more and more knowledgeable of the impact we can have on our planet, steps like this are what builds the industry into a more eco-friendly one. So it’s a bag worth shopping.

It pairs elegantly with the (very) long coat, which has been elevated into luxury by its sophisticated design. The slight pleats, pointed shoulders, neckline and buttons add bold dimension and detail that create an experimental answer to fashion. The matching fitted trousers sit at a perfect length to reveal the ultra-modern shoes beneath. They’re pointed, and plain black, which adds an element of mystery and lots of movement for styling options. The look as one is a sleek and classy contribution to this runway. Something refreshing to see.

Spring-Summer 2024

Diesel’s SS24 was decorated in the signature red and black Diesel colourway, in the middle of a rave. Literally. It was a free event, lasting 8 hours, hosting over 7000 guests. The backdrop to the runway was a huge screen which, after the fact, broadcasted free movies. This runway was filled with distressed fabrics, loose silhouettes and was overall pretty grungy. A very creative show, and one of Diesel’s most out there.

Streetwear x runways. A beautiful sight. This look has elevated cargo pants and a hoodie into high fashion, capturing everything trending rn, whilst remaining true to Diesel’s individual flair. The whole runway was full of utility-style clothing, baggy outfits and the distressed details, with this look being no exception.

Starting at the top, the cap has frayed, distressed elements, of course, that build an edgy aesthetic. The sunglasses, too, are a fresh detail to this look - reflecting the red of the runway ahead.  The hoodie/jacket has an interesting shape as seen around the collar, with the open design. It creates a contrasting panel to the rest of the fit and is something one of a kind. And, cargo/utility pants are, and were, very popular rn, and it goes without saying that they are the perfect pairing for the rest of the outfit. Similarly for the bag, which almost looks hidden amongst the fabric. Even the small details like the zips and wash of the clothing make this look everything that it is. Finally, the boots, which are very unique in shape and colour make for a satisfying blend of streetwear and high fashion. The look overall is something many of us would actually wear in our daily lives, and proves that Diesel continue to curate the drippiest collections.

The list of sensational runway garments is really endless. There are many Diesel runways, shows and collections, each with fits different to the rest and themes different to the past and future. But every look turns heads. Glenn Martens’ talent as creative director speaks for itself on the runways, and has taken Diesel to new heights over recent years. As much as the fashion industry is a tough world to please everyone, with so many different styles, preferences and trends, one thing we can all agree on is Diesel is the master of denim, and the curators of drippy, creative, exciting runways. For Successful Living.
